From Couch to 5K: Start Running Today

From Couch to 5K - Start Running Today

Have you been thinking about starting a new fitness plan, maybe you’d like to start running but don’t know where to begin? You might think running 5km (3.1 miles) is for experienced runners, but that’s simply not true. The beauty of the PFM Coaching Couch to 5K (C25K) programme lies in its accessibility. It’s designed for absolute beginners, taking you from the comfort of your couch to conquering a race distance in a structured and achievable way.

Who Is C25K For?

This programme is perfect for anyone who:

  • Hasn’t run in a while, or ever before
  • Wants to improve their overall fitness
  • Seeks a clear roadmap to achieve a running goal

How Does C25K Work?

PFM Coaching’s Couch to 5K plan is 10 weeks long, but you can repeat weeks as required. The plan mixes running and walking intervals that build your endurance gradually, starting with short running segments interspersed with walking breaks. As the weeks progress, the running intervals lengthen while the walking periods decrease. This allows your body to adapt comfortably, minimising the risk of injury. We all progress at different rates, though, so if a week ever feels difficult, simply repeat it and extend the plan to suit you!

What Are the Benefits of C25K?

Beyond the incredible achievement of completing a 5K, here’s what you can expect:

  • Improved cardiovascular health: running strengthens your heart and lungs, leading to better stamina and overall health.
  • Weight management: regular running burns calories and can aid in weight loss or maintenance.
  • Stress relief: running releases endorphins, natural mood-boosters that combat stress and anxiety.
  • Increased self-confidence: completing a C25K programme is a testament to your dedication and will leave you feeling empowered.
  • Social opportunities: running opens up a world of social opportunities and is a great way to meet new people.

What Do I Need to Start?

The first step if you’re new to exercise is to get the all-clear from your GP. Once that’s out of the way, you can start working towards a more active, healthier version of you.

Equipment

To begin running you really don’t need any fancy equipment, you can get started with:

  • Running trainers
  • Shorts, leggings or joggers
  • T-shirt
  • Socks

While there are technical versions of these that will make the experience more comfortable, they aren’t essential initially. Trainers designed for running will, however, be far more comfortable than fashion trainers.
